Last Saturday I drove to the Hidden Peaks Lake trailhead above the Cascade River Road above the North Cascades Highway above the Puget Sound. Our intent was to ski into Marble Creek via either the Lost Marbles Couloir or the Cumshot Couloir. Forecast called for partly cloudy but we got completely milk-jugged for most of the day. Luckily we got sphincter-pinching views into Marble Creek just before getting closed down by weather. We then retreated back down Sibley Creek by compass in the 2m visibility. Once finally back to tree line we brewed tea and dug snowcaves to stay warm, awaiting an expected late day clearing. By 4pm clouds lifted back to the peaks, letting us ski some fun turns on the lower slopes of Hidden Lake Peaks before retreating to the car. Conclusion: Marble Creek Cirque is disgusting. At 8,600' Eldorado crowns this epitome of Cascadian jungle-to-alpine trench, which in less than two miles drops to 2,400'. Will return soon.
