inserts?

Post by huevón »

What's the verdict on inserts (e.g. Quiver Killers) for hot swapping Dynafits? Worth it?
Do they strip? Do they weaken the ski? (Guy at a ski shop said this. Cconsidering the source...)

TIA
Should have some Verdicts in the mail...

ps. gear questions appropriate here?

I have been skiing on Quiver Killer inserts for a full season and have them on two pairs that get switched. They are definately worth it if you don't want to buy a new pair of dynafits per ski purchase. Also, if you travel, the skis can be "stacked" in the bag and it frees up a lot of space.

I think that a regular screw would strip out before an insert would. You'll be surprised when you see the threads compared to a regular screw. The reason the ski shop guy said that it would weaken the ski may be that some people are mounting multiple sets of bindings and drilling multiple holes (tele, Marker, Dynafit). He may have wanted to sell you additional bindings... maybe... ;) I don't think a slightly larger insert installed with epoxy would weaken it too much if it were only used to swap one binding.

A point of mention is that the screws that mount the binding are machine threads. Thus, care must be taken to avoid cross-threading when installing your binding. Use thread locking compound and a firm, but not abusive, torque.

The final bit of advice would be to purchase inserts from the guy that makes the DynaDuke plates. I haven't heard pro or con versus Quiver Killers, but they are almost 50 cents cheaper than the QKs.

Hope that helps. These are my opinions and I could be completely wrong. Somebody that skis harder than me (not hard to do  ) may have a better opinion of the durability of the inserts and if it weakens the ski.

I haven't used any myself. It doesn't seem like they should weaken the ski so much. Drew was using some kind of insert with Fritschi Freerides in comps a few years ago if that says anything. They seem like a fine idea to me.

The G3 AT bindings are made with a plate that allows the bindings to be easily swapped if you have any interest in those.
