Acadia NP & Quincy Quarry

Post by danhelmstadter »

I've been visiting family in New England this past week, and I was fortunate enough with the weather to get out and enjoy some classic climbing areas in Maine and Mass.

Acadia Natioanl Park on Mount Dessert Island is only an hour or so away from my Uncles place up in northeastern Maine. Getting stoked on climbing very recently has opened up a new world for me, and the idea of climbing sea cliffs above the Atlantic was too good to pass up. It was hard to leave, I climbed into the dark with a moon riseing above crashing waves.

Back in bean town, I enjoyed some fun conglomerate clambering at Hammond pond, then some very cool granite climbing at Quincy Quarry south of Boston. Quincy Quarry has some interesting history, opened in 1826, the rock from the quarry is said to have been used on some of the first railroad lines out west and was used to build the Bunker Hill monument. It's also said that some of the first cragging in the country took place at the quarry back in the day. The quarry has long been closed, and eventually filled with rain water. Aparently a lot of people lost their lives "cliff jumping" from up to 90 feet, hitting unseen objects below the surface, some official came up with an idea of putting a bunch of logs in the water to deter jumpers, the logs became water logged and sunk a foot or so below the surface, resulting in a large fatality increase. Recently, dirt from the "big dig" project in Boston was used to fill the quarrys half way or so, and the area is currently open to the public and is probably the place to go climbing around Boston. The rock has cool drill bore features, awesome granite riddled in many places with hidden jugs. The highest crag is about 50', definetly a place I'll return too.
